Oldoinyo Lengai

Rising dramatically from the Great Rift Valley floor, Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,962 m / 9,718 ft) is one of Tanzania’s most unique and sacred mountains. Known as the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, this active volcano is the only one in the world that erupts carbonatite lava—a rare, fast-cooling lava type that flows almost like water.

Towering above Lake Natron and the Maasai plains, Ol Doinyo Lengai offers an exhilarating hiking experience unlike any other in East Africa. For adventurous trekkers seeking raw beauty, cultural significance, and a true off-the-beaten-path challenge, this mountain is a must.

Cultural & Natural Highlights

Maasai Culture: Local Maasai communities live around the base of the mountain and view it as sacred. Many hiking trips include cultural interactions, offering travelers a deeper understanding of their traditions.

Lake Natron: At the foot of the volcano lies Lake Natron, famous for its flamingos, surreal alkaline waters, and otherworldly landscapes.

Wildlife & Landscapes: Though not a wildlife-heavy trek, the surrounding Rift Valley scenery—endless plains, escarpments, and volcanic formations—is breathtaking.
